Frequency and Risk Factors of Low Back Pain among Physicians and Surgeons working in a Tertiary Care Hospital

Abstract

Low back pain (LBP) is a major musculoskeletal disorder and a leading cause of disability worldwide, particularly among healthcare professionals exposed to prolonged standing, poor posture, and physically demanding work environments. This comparative cross-sectional study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated risk factors of low back pain among physicians and surgeons at the University of Lahore Teaching Hospital. A total of 44 participants, including 22 physicians and 22 surgeons aged 25–60 years, were recruited through convenience sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire assessing demographic characteristics, occupational factors, lifestyle habits, and low back pain-related symptoms. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 22. The findings revealed a high prevalence of LBP among both groups, affecting 68.2% of physicians and 72.7% of surgeons. Most participants reported moderate, diffuse pain persisting for more than six months. Surgeons experienced significantly higher levels of body twisting and prolonged standing during work, while physicians reported significantly greater fatigue. Poor posture, extended working hours, stress, prolonged standing, and repetitive body movements were identified as major occupational risk factors contributing to LBP. Although obesity rates were low, most participants were overweight according to body mass index. The study concludes that low back pain is highly prevalent among healthcare professionals, particularly surgeons, emphasizing the need for improved ergonomic practices, posture awareness, workplace interventions, and preventive strategies to reduce occupational musculoskeletal disorders and improve quality of life among healthcare workers.
