Relationship Between High Caloric Food Consumption and Obesity and Perceived Stress: Study among university students of Lahore

Abstract
Background: University students represent a high-risk group for unhealthy dietary behaviours and elevated
psychological stress. In Pakistan, rapid urbanisation and academic pressures have intensified reliance on high
caloric convenience foods, with emerging evidence linking such diets to increased BMI and greater perceived
stress.
Objectives: This study aimed to assess the relationship between high-calorie food intake, obesity (BMI), and
perceived stress among university students in Lahore.
Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 383 students aged 18–25 using a questionnaire
(demographics, FFQ, PSS-10) and anthropometric measurements. Chi-square tests were used for statistical
analysis.
Key Findings: Low consumption of milk (χ²=234.781, p<0.001), beef (χ²=72.646, p<0.001), and mutton
(χ²=148.817, p<0.001) was linked to higher stress, while regular intake of fish (χ²=156.070, p<0.001) and
kidney (χ²=48.503, p<0.001) was associated with lower stress.
Conclusion: High-caloric food intake is linked to both obesity and stress. These findings highlight the need
for targeted nutrition and mental health interventions in university settings.
